Mom grieves for baby killed in vehicle accident

Carla Harper of Sandy Hook flips through a photo album with pictures of her baby, Caynen Woodward, who was killed ain n automobile accident on New Year's Day.

By Josh Mitchell/Informer Publisher

It has been almost three months since Carla Harper’s infant son was killed as a result of injuries he sustained in an automobile accident just after midnight on New Year’s Day.

According to District Attorney Hal Kittrell, a Marion County Grand Jury is scheduled to hear the facts of the case in May or June. The Informer requested to review the case file, but Kittrell said it is closed to the public at this time.

Harper of Sandy Hook met with the Marion County Informer on Friday at WOW Wingery in Columbia to talk about the accident that claimed the life of her 22-month-old baby, Caynen Woodward.

According to the Highway Patrol, 47-year-old Richard Kennedy of Angie, La. was driving in the wrong direction on U.S. Highway 98 when he collided head-on with the vehicle driven by Caynen’s father, Brandon Woodward. Caynen’s 5-year-old sister, Hayley, was also in the vehicle and suffered three cracked vertebrae.

Brandon still has a rod in his leg and pins in his knee, and Caynen passed away the day after the accident at University Medical Center in Jackson.  Kennedy’s vehicle was also occupied by Vikki L. Vince, 42, of Sandy Hook, who was uninjured in the accident that happened just east of Foxworth at the Pearl River bridge.

Carla Harper breaks down into tears as she talks about the loss of her child.

Harper explained that Brandon, Hayley and Caynen were on their way to pick her up from the fireworks stand in Foxworth where she worked. She said they had stopped at Cox’s Triangle convenience store to get snacks before getting her, and Caynen got some gum.

When they left the store, Caynen was in a child’s car seat behind Brandon, Carla said, adding it has been rumored that there was not a child’s seat in the truck.

As they were riding down the road, Caynen climbed out of his car seat and into his dad’s lap, apparently trying to get the gum. Brandon was going to pull over and put Caynen back in the car seat, but it was too late, Carla said. Just about that time, Brandon saw a vehicle coming directly at him and swerved right, and the vehicle headed toward him did the same and they smashed into each other, she said.

Earlier in the day, Brandon, Hayley and Caynen were at the fireworks stand with Carla, and Caynen got a Roman candle that he wanted to shoot off. Carla told Caynen that he could shoot it off later that night.

When the crash happened, about 35 family members and friends were waiting at Brandon’s and Carla’s house because they were going to shoot off fireworks when they got back home.

After Brandon did not arrive to pick her up, Carla thought something might be wrong and called the Sheriff’s Office dispatch and asked if there had been an accident on Highway 35, and the dispatcher said no.

Carla called her boss to come pick her up, thinking that something had gone wrong.  When she got off the phone with her boss, Sheriff’s Office Chief Deputy Jeff Broom arrived at the fireworks tent and said there had been an accident. She asked Broom if her baby was OK, and he did not answer and told her to get in his vehicle and put on her seatbelt.

Caynen Joe Woodward

Broom drove her to the accident scene, and she saw the emergency vehicles’ lights and got out of the car and ran up the middle of the road. Her sister, Melissa Wiggins, was already on scene.

Carla made her way to the truck her family was in, and before she got there she saw Caynen lying on the ground, but he didn’t look badly hurt. He seemed to only have a scratch on his head, but she knew something more was wrong by the way the paramedics looked at her.

She then went to see Hayley who said the driver of the other vehicle was on the wrong side of the road. Hayley kept asking if she was going to die and if “Cane Cane” was going to heaven.

“I just said he would be OK, and she would be too,” said Harper. Brandon was stuck in the truck and also said the other driver was on the wrong side of the road. Click to continue »
