Vernon Curtis appointed to Columbia School District Board

Tuesday, February 9th, 2010

Vernon Curtis

By Josh Mitchell/Informer Publisher

Vernon Curtis was appointed to the Columbia School District Board on Monday night by the Columbia Board of Aldermen.

Aldermen Cheryl Bourne, Wendell Hammond, Todd Pittman and Edward Hough voted to appoint Curtis and Alderman Rene Galloway voted against Curtis.

Curtis brings more than 20 years of experience in education to the School Board. Curtis began his education career teaching Western civilization at Jones County Junior College in Ellisville for three and a half years.

He also worked as a fifth grade teacher at West Marion Elementary from 1986-1996. He was the assistant principal at Picayune Junior High School for nine and a half years before retiring more than three years ago.

He has a master’s degree in education and a certificate in administration from William Carey University. With his years of experience working in education, Curtis feels like he can bring a lot to the School Board.

Curtis was appointed to replace Jerry Howell, who will resign from the board at the end of his term March 1. Howell is resigning to devote more time to his duties as the administrator of Marion General Hospital. School Board terms are five years.

Police chief applicant Childress addresses residency issues in letter to Marion County Informer

Tuesday, February 9th, 2010

Mike Childress

Hello Citizens of Columbia and Marion County:
This is Mike Childress and I would like to personally address all who seem to be questioning my feelings about the Columbia Chiefs position and my professionalism.

First and foremost, as I have said; I have known Jim Kinslow for almost 30 years. I think Jim is a fine law enforcement officer and certainly more than competent to do the job that the City of Columbia has hired him to do.

I was contacted by both the Columbian Progress and the Marion County Informer and asked how I felt about not being selected to be the Chief. I did not seek them out to make any statement, but I would have been untruthful to say anything else but that, I was somewhat disappointed. I would have enthusiastically served the citizens of Columbia and brought 27 years of law enforcement experience to the table, 20+ years of that was working with Jim at the Hattiesburg Police Department.

I was also asked, when called, about Jim being able to live outside the County. The Informer asked me if my application stated or had a residence clause in it and I told him it did. If the other applications did not have that statement in it, then there is really nothing I can say to that except that all of the applications should have been the same and more clear on the expectations of the City. Mississippi authors to speak at Columbia-Marion County Public Library

Monday, February 8th, 2010

Ramona Bridges

Two Mississippi authors will read excerpts from their novels, sign copies of their books and take questions at the Columbia-Marion County Public Library on Tuesday, Feb. 9 from 11:30 a.m.-1:30 p.m.

Ramona Bridges of Seminary wrote “Sweet By and By,” and Jean Crockett of Hattiesburg is the author of “To Love a Scoundrel.”

Jean Davis Crockett

Crockett’s “To Love a Scoundrel” is set in Jefferson Davis County in the 1930s and 40s. Most women who live during that time are stay-at-home moms, but Nina Coulter, a beautiful, naive Southern girl wants to be more. She wants to become a nurse, and she wants to go to Hollywood with Curtis, her first love and a guitar-toting motorcyclist who wants to break into pictures. Nina sees her dreams crumble when there is no money for nurse training, and she and Curtis have a spat. Ignored by Curtis, she tries to find happiness by marrying other men, but throughout the marriages, she longs for Curtis. A murder in the community unexpectedly causes Nina’s attitude to change and affords new opportunities whereby she might, at last, find some measure of happiness. Friday, February 5th, 2010

Dear Editor:

The staff of the Marion County-City of Columbia Library would like to publicly thank the Marion County Board of Supervisors for the repairs and restoration of the library. As many people know, the library suffered significant damage following the roof leak. The library now has new carpet upstairs and the stained ceiling tiles have been replaced.

The library is “looking good” once again. We invite the citizens of Marion County to stop by the library and see all that we have to offer.

Sincerely,
Gail Bracey, Director
