At that point, three black females allegedly began assaulting her by kicking her and punching while she was on the ground, Brumfield said.

One of the suspects took possession of the vehicle and it has been determined that the vehicle was registered to one of the suspects. The suspects also allegedly took $1,000 out of the victim’s purse, Brumfield said.

Columbia man indicted on hate crime charges

Friday, July 16th, 2010

Roland J. Bourgeois Jr.

From the U.S. Department of Justice:

Columbia resident Roland J. Bourgeois Jr., 47, was charged Thursday in a five-count indictment with conspiring to commit a hate crime, committing a hate crime with a deadly weapon and with intent to kill, making false statements and obstructing of justice in connection with a shooting that happened in the days after Hurricane Katrina.

Thursday’s indictment was announced by Assistant Attorney General for the Civil Rights Division Thomas E. Perez; U.S. Attorney for the Eastern District of Louisiana Jim Letten; and Special Agent in Charge of the FBI New Orleans Field Office David Welker.

According to the indictment, on Sept. 1, 2005, Roland Bourgeois Jr. fired a shotgun at three African-American men because of their race and because they were attempting to use the public streets in the Algiers Point neighborhood of New Orleans. These African-American men were wounded as they sought to evacuate from New Orleans in the wake of Hurricane Katrina.

The indictment alleges that, after Hurricane Katrina, Bourgeois discussed shooting African-Americans and defending Algiers Point from outsiders, including African-Americans who did not live in the neighborhood. After Bourgeois fired a shotgun at the three men walking on a public street, he learned that one of his victims had been wounded and he announced that he was going to kill African-Americans. Bourgeois then allegedly warned an African-American resident of Algiers Point that, “anything coming up this street darker than a brown paper bag is getting shot.” Immediately following the shooting, Bourgeois retrieved from the scene – and subsequently displayed – a bloody baseball cap that belonged to one of the victims.

The indictment further alleges that Bourgeois later provided a false statement to federal agents investigating the Sept. 1, 2005, shooting in Algiers Point. Bourgeois is also charged with corruptly persuading an eyewitness to lie to the FBI. Finally, Bourgeois is charged with using a firearm in furtherance of the alleged conspiracy and civil rights offenses.

Bourgeois faces a possible maximum sentence of life in prison.

This case, which is ongoing, is being investigated by the New Orleans Field Office of the FBI, and is being prosecuted by the Justice Department’s Civil Rights Division Trial Attorney Forrest Christian and Assistant U.S. Attorney for the Eastern District of Louisiana W. Scott Laragy.

An indictment is merely an accusation, and the defendant is presumed innocent unless proven guilty.

A Monday high speed chase between law enforcement and an alleged Wal-Mart shoplifter ended when the suspect crashed his vehicle into a light pole and ran into the woods where he was apprehended.

The suspect, Christopher Aguero of Foxworth, is charged with two counts of aggravated assault and felony evasion in relation to the incident. According to Detective Al Preston, Aguero struck Columbia police officer Lynn Phillips in the mouth with his elbow as she was trying to take him into custody at Wal-Mart for shoplifting.

After Aguero, 19, hit officer Phillips, he ran into the Wal-Mart parking lot, got in his vehicle and drove away on Highway 98. Aguero was traveling at a high rate of speed, ran a red light and was running other motorists off the road in the incident that occurred around 7 p.m. said Preston. The chase, which included police and the Sheriff’s Office, continued onto New Hope Road in Foxworth where Aguero was allegedly still running vehicles off the road.

Aguero lost control of his vehicle and collided with a light pole, and his vehicle rolled three times, Preston said. Aguero, who was not injured, bailed out of the vehicle and ran into the woods where he was apprehended shortly after. Officer Phillips was taken to Marion General Hospital for her injury where she was treated and released, said Preston.

Broom appointed Municipal Court judge

Thursday, July 8th, 2010

Judge Gwen Broom

The Columbia Board of Aldermen on Tuesday unanimously appointed Gwen Broom as Municipal Court judge.

Broom has been filling in as interim judge since former Municipal Court judge Forest Dantin passed away in January.

Broom, who is also a Marion County Justice Court judge, said she will keep that post as well. Municipal Court typically only meets twice a month and therefore should not interfere with her Justice Court duties, she said.

She has been Justice Court judge since 1999. Jail is not always the answer for criminals, Broom said, adding she hopes defendants can be reformed and get on a better path in life.

City Prosecutor Leigh Berry, Columbia attorney Joe Turney and Columbia attorney Renee Porter had also been considered for the Municipal Court judge position.

Broom will make $1,352 a month as Municipal Court judge.

Johnny Glen Edwards exits Circuit Court.

By Josh Mitchell/Informer Publisher

A man admitted to the Marion County Informer today that he snatched a woman’s purse and broke into a vehicle to get money to purchase drugs.

“I was messed up on drugs and snatched a woman’s purse,” said the suspect, Johnny Glen Edwards, after his initial appearance in Marion County Circuit Court this afternoon.

Edwards, 33, said he was under the influence of crack cocaine, and when he realized what he had done he turned himself into law enforcement the next day. “I’m very sorry for what I did,” said Edwards, adding that he hopes there is “some kind of program I can go through” in lieu of a heavy prison sentence.

Edwards, whose mother attended the court appearance with him, said he has never been in trouble before the incident. He said the drugs made him commit the crime and lamented that he will have to live with what he has done for the rest of his life.

Edwards was arrested July 2 on an indictment for robbery and auto burglary. The robbery indictment alleges that Edwards approached a woman from behind and jerked her purse of her arm on Dec. 21, 2007 in Marion County.

The indictment for the auto burglary charges that Edwards broke into a vehicle the same day in Marion County. Edwards admitted that he committed the two crimes within one hour of each other.

Chassie Medious is charged with murder and burglary of a dwelling, and Nicholas Medious is charged with aggravated assault and burglary of a dwelling. Both Nicholas and Chassie Medious broke into Murphy’s residence to assault him, the indictment adds.

Chassie Medious, 42, is out of jail on $250,000 bond while Nicholas, 38, remains in Marion County Jail on $50,000 bond. As he exited the courtroom today Chassie Medious told the Marion County Informer that he is not guilty. He offered no other comment.

Willie Smith of Marion County is charged with five counts of sexual battery and five counts of statutory rape.

New thrift store benefits domestic violence shelter

Wednesday, June 30th, 2010

Jean Spring paints the walls of the former AutoZone building.

By Josh Mitchell/Informer Publisher

A new thrift store that will benefit a domestic violence shelter is scheduled to open in the former AutoZone building in Downtown Columbia in the next couple of weeks.

Proceeds from the thrift store will go to the WINGS domestic violence shelter in McComb. WINGS, which stands for Women in Need of God’s Shelter, serves seven counties, including Marion.

The thrift store, located on Broad Street, is in the process of being painted, and when it opens will sell furniture, clothes, shoes and other items.

The thrift store will also have an office where counseling will be offered to women and children who are victims of domestic violence, according to Director Jean Spring, who hopes to educate the community more about spousal abuse.

“I intend to get out in the community and see who’s interested in domestic violence,” she said.

The former AutoZone building is being converted into a thrift store to benefit a domestic violence shelter.

Spring said some men use the Bible to justify domestic violence by pointing to a scripture that says a woman must be submissive to man. Therefore, Spring said she would like to engage local pastors more in domestic violence education.

The thrift store proceeds will also go toward helping elderly pay for their medications, and furniture and clothing will be donated to house fire victims, Spring said.

The thrift store will pick up items five days a week from those who wish to donate. To schedule a pickup call Spring at (601) 551-2330. She said the thrift store will only accept items that are “gently used.”

She is glad to be offering the services in Marion County, saying Mississippi ranks No. 2 in the nation for the domestic violence.

WINGS operates under the umbrella of Southwest Mississippi Christian Ministries, a non-profit organization founded by Spring. Spring said that the WINGS shelter in McComb currently has 18 beds, but she is in the process of trying to obtain a grant to add 82 more beds.

The shelter was started in 2009, and two psychiatrists and four licensed mental health social workers volunteer at the facility, said Spring. In the future, she hopes to have other volunteers including court advocates, housing authority officials and Department of Human Services employees.

Spring said she has introduced herself to Marion County law enforcement to let them know about the services she offers. A hotline is always available to victims of domestic violence by calling (601) 684-9111.

The other counties WINGS serves are Franklin, Amite, Walthall, Pike, Lincoln and Lawrence. Other than the thrift store in Marion County, the only other one in the seven-county region is in McComb, but Spring hopes to open one in each county.

The proceeds from the stores will provide much-needed funding, she said, adding that it costs a “fortune” to run a domestic violence shelter.

While Mary spoke with the Informer, friends from her church stopped in to give her food and share their condolences. Mary said the last time she saw her son was June 21 when he paid a visit to her Columbia apartment.

Willie Medious, 58, had two children, said his ex-wife Wanda. Willie would often go down to the Pearl River to fish, and could swim across the river, Wanda said.
