The Frank B. Hendricks Jr. VFW Post No. 5393 on Highway 13 South in Marion County will be giving away school supplies on Saturday from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. The VFW Post will give away 350 bags of school supplies for children in grades K-6. Supplies to be given away will include all items that are listed on school supply lists.

Tuesday, August 3rd, 2010A family fun event with a fireworks display, free hotdogs, hamburgers and pizza will take place tonight at the Columbia Water Park.
The event, called National Night Out, is from 5-9 p.m. and is sponsored by the Columbia Police Department and Marion County Sheriff’s Office. The night will conclude with a big fireworks display around 9 p.m. Other activities will include a DUI golf cart course, fire department will put on safety events, jumping houses for children, neighborhood watch groups will be on hand to talk to others about starting a similar organization, and church groups will be singing.
Sheriff’s Office steps up patrols for ‘Click It or Ticket’
Thursday, May 27th, 2010The Marion County Sheriff’s office has announced that it will be stepping up patrols of seatbelt enforcement for the Click it or Ticket campaign. Enhanced nighttime enforcement of seatbelt laws will be in effect until June 6, according to Sheriff Berkley Hall. Unbuckled motorists will be issued citations.
Unique breast cancer benefit tonight
Thursday, May 20th, 2010A unique breast cancer benefit will be held tonight at D-Kay’s restaurant in Columbia from 6-9 p.m.
Sponsored by The Pink Feathers, the event involves auctioning off decorative art bras that have been donated by talented businesses and individuals. Admission is free, but The Pink Feathers asks for a donation at the door. The art bras are open to the public for viewing today around 5 p.m. before the bidding starts. All proceeds from the event will go to help someone in the community.
Christian rock concert this weekend in City Park

A Christian rock concert will be held this Saturday at 7 p.m. in Columbia’s Friendship Park on the Zellco stage.
This concert was set to take place two weeks ago but was rescheduled to this Saturday due to rain. Marion County band Cornerstone will perform and admission is free. All donations will benefit Habitat for Humanity. For more information contact Michael “Duck” Griffith at (601) 441-6319.

UPDATE: Officials say U.S. Highway 98 is now reopened after being closed for the helicopter to land. One man was hurt in the one-vehicle accident. Southwest Marion VFD was assisted by Foxworth VFD.

The Junior Auxiliary is accepting nominations for its annual Citizen of the Year award until the deadline March 31.
Nominations can be mailed to the Junior Auxiliary at P.O. Box 549. A letter of recommendation should be sent explaining why a particular person should be chosen as Citizen of the Year.
A panel of Junior Auxiliary members will review the nominations and select a winner. The winner will be announced April 10 at the Junior Auxiliary Charity Ball.

Marion County’s unemployment rate is on the rise, according to the latest figures released by the State Department of Employment Security.
In January, Marion County’s unemployment rate was 13 percent compared to 11.3 percent the previous month and 8.4 percent a year ago.
Marion County has a labor force of 11,040 and 1,440 were unemployed in January.
Mississippi’s seasonally adjusted unemployment rate for January was 10.9 percent. Rankin County had the lowest unemployment rate of 8 percent, and Noxubee and Holmes had the highest of 23.1 percent.
The nation’s unemployment rate for decreased from 10 percent in December to 9.7 percent in January but was up from 7.7 percent a year ago.

The first meeting for the new Friends of the Library group at Columbia-Marion County Public Library took place this week. About 10 people showed up to learn about the Friends program, which will help the library through fundraising, promotion of events and volunteering. Membership dues and election of officers will be discussed at the next meeting that has not been scheduled. Ambitious “go-getters” are sought to get the Friends program off the ground. Anyone interested in joining the Friends group should call (601) 736-5516.
Local Authors visit CHS

Local authors Lennie Rankin Mills and Brandi Perry spoke to Columbia High School English classes last week about the experience of being a writer. Perry, a Columbia High School graduate, wrote “Wayward Justice” and Mills, a West Marion High School graduate, wrote “Through the Eyes of a Child.” Perry currently resides in Marion County, while Mills lives in Gautier.

Columbia resident Barbara Ann Stewart holds a bird that was injured after it flew into the glass front door of City Hall on Tuesday night. Stewart was attending the Board of Aldermen meeting and went outside to check on the bird after she heard it hit the door. She picked the bird up and held it in the palm of her hand for a while. It looked uncertain at first if the bird would make it, but it gradually regained its composure and eventually flew away.
CHS musical ‘Grease’ this Friday and Saturday

The Columbia High School musical Grease is this Friday and Saturday at 7:30 p.m. in Crystelle Ford Auditorium.
Tickets are $10 in advance at the Columbia High School Main office and $12 at the door.
The cast will hold a sneak preview at the Columbia-Marion County Public Library on Friday at 3:30 p.m.
