Those who want to run for seats on the Marion County School Board can now qualify for the Nov. 2 election.
Sept. 3 is the last day to qualify for the election which will be for seats in Districts 1 and 2. There will be a special election for District 3 to fill two remaining years of an unexpired term.
Anyone who wants to run for one of the seats must have a petition signed by 50 registered voters in the respective district. Candidates must reside in the district they are running for.
The petitions are available at the Marion County Circuit Clerkâs Office. The terms in District 1 and 2 are for six years, and School Board members are paid $200 a month.
The District 1 seat is currently held by Jackie Broom; District 2 Keith Stuckey; and 3 Samantha Armstrong. Broom, Stuckey and Armstrong were not immediately available for comment to determine if they will they seek re-election.
As of this morning, no one had qualified to run for any of the School District seats.

ok folks heres your chance, remember the ones that voted to raise taxes ? Let your voices be heard vote them out !
Even though the school board is dropping down to one meeting a month, (to save the district money), are the board members still being paid $200 per month, or was the pay $400 per month prior to this change? Instead of saving money, it sounds to me that they only DOUBLED THEIR SALARY. I hope that people read what Catfish submitted and remember it come election day if anyone is qualified to run for the positions available.
Really folks, you need to know what is state law. This salary is set by the state and remains the same until the state changes it. It does not matter how many board meetings there are in a month, at certain times of the year there are up to four per month for the same salary of $200.00 per month.
Here is one that I would like to see the books on.
I live just outside the city limits.
I want to know why we have two school boards. Why do I pay city and county taxes and cannot vote or run for office in the city. That’s taxation without representation.
Are you paying city or county school taxes? I believe that makes a difference as far as voting and what you are qualified to run for. I also think that if you stop by Cass Barnes’ office at the courthouse, he can give you more information on your questions. He is always willing to help the people of Marion County.
If you live in the city school district you do not pay county school taxes. I thought everyone knew this. When you pay your taxes ask questions.
John,
I also would love to know why people that live in the city limits pay city and county taxes. People that live in the county don’t pay city taxes so how is this fair?
I wish Aaron Hailey would quit pushing the schools to combined. He does not even have a child in school and he keeps saying it is for the children, I think he means he don’t want to pay taxes and it is for him. The class rooms are already crowed and my children already get on a bus at 6:15 in the morning and get home after 4. I think the schools are fine like they are, he needs to stay off our school board and leave them alone. What good will crowed the classrooms and stressing teachers do.
