A TEA Party political rally will be held in Columbia in front of the Marion County Courthouse on Saturday from 10 a.m.-12:30 p.m.
The TEA Party is a national grassroots movement that promotes limited government, free markets and fiscal responsibility.
The Columbia rally on Saturday will feature several speakers including 4th Congressional District Libertarian candidate Tim Hampton of Hattiesburg, State Sen. Joey Fillingane, R-Sumrall, retired professor of economics Jim McQuiston of Columbia, 10th District Chancery Court judge candidate Dawn Beam of Sumrall, 15th District Circuit Court judge candidate Tony Mozingo of Purvis, the Rev. Ken Shinn of Marion County, TEA Party co-organizer Donna Fite, former 4th District Congressional Republican candidate Joe Tegerdine of Petal, and Ken Knopp of the Columbia Edward Jones office.
TEA Party rallies are usually attended by protesters who disagree with the way the federal government is running the country. Attendees of the Columbia rally are encouraged to bring homemade signs displaying their displeasure with the government. This is the second year for the Columbia rally, and it was started because many people wanted a forum to voice their opinions, said co-organizer Fite. The rally will be a peaceful protest, and law enforcement will be on hand, said Fite, who organized the rally with Kelly Roberts. Rally attendees should bring seating and beverages for themselves.

TEA PARTY i think is a good thing but why doesn’t some one have the courage or won’t to to look into CITY Politics ? I guess its that good ole boy system .
Because the Teabaggers can protest in town, which means nothing except to show to the rest of Columbia how ignorant Republitards are. As opposed to doing something meaningful.
God Bless the Tea Party Movement. Let’s take our Country back for God. In God We Trust….
“Tea Party Movement” ? Please. Bill Clinton’s interview a few years ago with Katie Curick, regarding his new (at the time) book, “My Life”, answered Ms. Curick’s question about the strong opposition to his presidency by the GOP as being “. . as far as (the GOP) is concerned, my election upset the natural order of things, and (the GOP) was determined to drive the infidel from the temple.”
THAT is the purpose of this “Tea Party” movement. If Bill Clinton was “an infidel in the temple”, the election of Barack Obama must have sent the GOP and it’s fringe element into the STRATOSPHERE.
Tea Party? Pfffff-ttt. “Bring it on.”
Does anyone honestly believe that our highly intellectual founding fathers would have tea with this group? I think they’d get a fine chuckle.
We are all entitled to our beliefs, opinions, and disagreements; since you gave yours I’ll lend voice to mine: If the founding fathers could see this small, yet growing movement organizing across our nation they’d nod in agreement and ask, “What took you so long?”
Indeed the framers of our nation and authors of our Constitution and Bill of Rights began their endeavors with leaving room for change realizing the future would probably be vastly different from their contemporary times. They could only imagine the future size and diversity of the nation they united as a protest against a tyrannical nation bent on enriching themselves on the backs of a bunch of mostly ignorant, subservient pioneers thousands of miles away. Little did the British realize how the opportunity given a few subjects of the crown would burgeon into independence and yearnings to be free and create govern themselves. It is with a profound sense of history that I recall not all of the colonists were willing to leave the commonwealth but the right prevailed. Today the oppressors are corporations and wealthy individuals but the yoke of tyranny has become too heavy to bear once again and patriots are once again seeking to set things right!
I’m not so optimistic to think I’ll see the full harvest of this planting the seeds for the orchards of tomorrow but am secure in the knowledge some people have had the foresight and incentive to break the ground.
This is how America began and without peaceful revolution it will wither and die.
Again: All that is required for evil to triumph is for good people to do nothing.
I got a little messed up when discussing the yearning of our founding fathers and those they represented to set up their own government.
It would be really nice if there were some way to edit our remarks here or indeed to delete them within a reasonable time frame.
A very happy Independence Day to all and I hope we’ll all reflect on what a rare privilege it is to be able to speak our mind whithout fear of legal reprisal. People have died in other times and places for expressing opinions.
I thank God for America!
To all above commentors against the “tea party”:
Why is it when someone else believes differently than you people do, you people demonize the opposition and call them names?
A recent poll by Rasmussen showed people in the tea party movement understood more about the U.S. Constitution and the Bill of Rights than the majority of serving democrats.
The Federal Govt. has encroached in our lives farther than the founding fathers intended.
Why is it my duty to feed someone else’s children at school? My parents didn’t do that.
Why will I be forced soon if the states don’t prevail to buy something from a private company(health insurance) or be penalized by the IRS if I don’t?
The federal govt.’s role is to provide for the defense of the U.S. from foreign aggressors, not to take care of us from birth to grave.
It’s time for PERSONAL RESPONSIBILITY to prevail!
