Sonrise Ministries donates to elderly, disabled and low-income

Written by admin on June 18th, 2010

Sonrise Ministries of Columbia paid a visit to East Columbia Apartments on Thursday to donate food and drink items to the elderly, low-income and disabled residents. Assistant Manager of East Columbia Apartments Sheila Conerly said Sonrise has been donating to the residents for 10 years and has been “a great help.”  Sonrise had a truckload full of grocery bags containing  juice, syrup and candy, said Sonrise Ministries Director Ken Stover. See the gallery below for pictures of the residents receiving the items from Sonrise.

Sonrise Ministries is doing a great service to their fellow man. Living in small town America, we often do not think about the existence of homelessness, hunger, and doing without other basic needs. So, a big thank you to Sonrise Ministries:)

A free site called Guidestar has tax returns (informational form 990) for this organization and other not-for-profits. It’s interesting to see where the bulk of the money collected through donations, etc. lands. If you’re under the impression this place is run totally by volunteers, you’re wrong!

Nice to see charitable acts in Columbia. I feel sure there are many more people who need to be reached.Although I know very little about Sonrise, I have worked with many charities. In most all charitable organizations, there are some paid employees.

Right-o, domino. But, I think the real key here is finding the ratio of money used for charitible purposes vs. what’s used for paying people to deliver the services. Some charities, I believe, exist to meet community needs while others appear to exist primarily to support the people who administer them and their families. The informational tax returns help me decide which charities I want to support. Personally, I go with the ones that appear to meet a community need. A quick guidestar review helps me decide.

Typically I agree with most of your comments on many issues. However, on this issue, I have to somewhat disagree with you. I can understand what you are saying about the use of funds “intended” for the charity being used as support for the people that run the ministry. If the people running the ministry are to survive themselves, they more than likely have to resort to using the funds to do so. I am sure that there would not be a ministry or charity if these people were not capable of personally surviving.
In a day and time when most people do not give a 2nd thought to helping their fellow man, its nice to know that there are a FEW people still left that will do so. I know every single month that I receive bills in the mail box, as I am sure you do as well. If I do not have some sort of funds to pay those bills, then I will be miserable without electricity in 98 degree temps.
I do not know any of the people running this ministry. But, if they are helping 1 person in need, I believe that is MORE than the typical person ever does.
