A major expansion to Pearl River Valley Electric Power Association is under way in Columbia as the organization continues to grow.

General Manager Randy Wallace said the 8,000 square foot addition being built adjacent to the current building on Highway 13 North is the largest expansion in his more than 30 years with the association. “We are blessed to have had good growth over the years,” Wallace told the Marion County Informer today.

He noted that when he started working for the association in 1977 it had 16,000 customers, and now there are 47,000.

The main reason for the expansion is to open up more space to provide training on new technology, primarily electronic panels for substations. Administrative and office personnel will move into the expansion, leaving the existing building to be used for training.

Pearl River Valley, a non-profit electric cooperative, serves parts of 12 counties, with its headquarters in Columbia.

I’m guessing that the expense of this project will be passed on to the consumers of Pearl River Valley Electric.

    • Agree says:

You bet, seems like instead of spending the money on more buildings the association could return MORE money to its member/owners or reduce electric rates. As a member/owner myself, that is something I would like to see.

      my thinking exactly….

    • Just asking says:

We use to get checks back from the light company. I recall last year they told my dad that the check was posted to his bill…. What are we to do??

  2. Voice of Reason says:

Probably; it probably gets some matching federal funds but it is a member-owned cooperative. It was the last time I had direct knowledge of its operations.

It is a business though and this has to be looked on as an investment in the future and will probably wind up generating profits in the long run which will be shared equally by its members/owners – No?

  3. wow says:

The expense has been passed on for some time . What can we do about it, they would tell us to conserve, either way your money goes to them

  4. msunshinelady says:

Yep, we have already bought that expansion and will be paying for more….

Obama? Is that you? No? Its Randy Wallace!!I appreciate “Voice of Reason’s” comment but wake up “member owners”! Do WE really need a new office? Could they not just add on to the current office? Or do the higher ups require a separate office. Perhaps King Randy needs a new throne?

Maybe the member owners need a small check in the mail.

    “Dear Member Owner,
Thanks for your support of the new regime here at PRVEPA. Please accept this small check from all of us at PRVEPA. This is a small thanks for allowing us to build an unnecessary office and for your trust in us to spend your “non profit dollars” on ourselves.

Thanks and set your thermostats to 84 degrees this summer due to the rise in summer heat and your electricity bill.

    Thank you,

    King Randy Wallace

    Im Just Sayin…..

Who do I have to “BUTTER UP” to get my name automatically printed on a ballot for being a director. It must be nice to receive a nice check each month and have free insurance provided too. Member owned? What a farce.

  7. Herb says:

PRVEPA is a mirror of the obama adminstration, NO TRANSPARENCY. It is a clandestine run operation. Why isn’t the managers and board members minutes plubished in the “TODAY” magazine? I am looking forward to seeing the managers NEW office and board meeting room, that is if “member owners” are allowed to see them.

I posted earlier but dont see my post. I am wondering “Why” Marion County is still building stuff and they already have “SOOOO MANY” vacant buildings… Dont you think this is a waste of money???

  10. Ace of Spades says:

Well technically it is being run by Obama. Cap&Trade is coming soon. Its better for them to go ahead and expand and find cleaner ways to create power, than to wait, pay huge fines, then pass down the costs to us. Me, I like coal. If I die at 80 of cancer, fine. Who would wanna live any longer anyhow. At least the last 57 years of my life wouldnt have been working twice as hard just to pay the electricity because we dont have a dam, solar, or wind power. Cap N Trade, for lack of a better word, SUCKS.
