In a freak vehicle accident last night in front of the Double D bar on Highway 13 North in Columbia, a car went up in flames after allegedly crashing into an unoccupied SUV parked on the side of the road.

No one was injured in the accident.

Tommy McDaniel, owner of WCJU and WJDR radio stations, was inside the Double D for the Jeff Bates concert, when a motorist allegedly crashed into the back of his Explorer.

“I was parked on the highway in front of the Double D and some kid just came along and killed it. He ran into the back of it (my Explorer),” McDaniel told the Marion County Informer this morning.

This car burned up after the crash.

The man who allegedly crashed into McDaniel’s vehicle apparently works at Jack’s Family Restaurant in Columbia. A Jack’s employee told the Informer that Matthew Green is the driver’s name. Green could not be reached for comment.

McDaniel said, “I went to the Double D with a car and came back without one.”

The vehicle fire was fully involved when the Columbia Fire Department arrived on scene. Columbia Police and the Marion County Sheriff’s Office responded. No one was arrested in the incident, according to the Fire Department.

McDaniel’s Explorer sustained heavy damage to the back, and the other vehicle’s front end was crumpled and the interior was burned up.

Mr.McDaniel should be ticketed for parking within 20 feet of a right of way. That’s why its a law. The shoulder of the road is a buffer zone for safety.

The person who was driving should be compensated for Mr.McDaniel’s alleged illegal parking and endangering the public.

Maybe he should not be parking in the road.

How is that a “freak” accident. A car on the road drifted off of the roadway and collided with a car parked on shoulder. It happens a lot.

      Dear Enforcer:

It was the fact that the car burst into flames that I think made the accident somewhat unusual.

Is it possible the car was already on fire, causing the driver to drift and collide with Mr. McDaniel’s SUV?

  6. enforcer says:

Seems like some vehicle manufacturers need to be called. Aren’t they supposed to be crash tested to make sure this doesn’t happen? I’ve seen a lot of wrecks and that one looks serious but not enough to catch on fire… Strange…

maybe next time use the parking lot

    freaky. glad nobody was hurt.

To all those concerned…Someone WAS hurt in the accident! Even though it was not serious someone should have checked with the local hospital, even if the injured party was not available for comment. That would have only been common sense to do so. For that matter … since when is it LEGAL to park on a public highway?? Mr. Tommy states so himself that is where he parked HIS SUV ! All I want to say to this story is that one should have ALL the facts before one reports on ANYTHING they did not wittness themselves ! By the way … for those concerned for the other “alleged” driver… he is doing much better and is thanking GOD he got out in time !!
